Manila Bay, Philippines – The Bureau of Agricultural and Fisheries Engineering (BAFE) actively participated in the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) in Manila Bay, showing its commitment to combating marine pollution and promoting a sustainable future. The ICC, celebrated every third Saturday of September, is the world’s largest volunteer effort aimed at cleaning oceans and finding solutions to ocean pollution.
This year’s event was held under the theme “Clean Seas for Blue Economy,” highlighting the important role of clean oceans in supporting sustainable fisheries and the livelihood of fisherfolk. On September 21, 2024, the DA-BAFE, in line with its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, joined volunteers from both the public and private sectors in removing debris and trash that threaten marine life and ecosystems.
Marine pollution remains a pressing issue in the Philippines, where the local fishing industry relies heavily on the health of coastal waters. By participating in the ICC, BAFE helps in efforts at mitigating the direct impact of pollution on fishing operations and the broader implications for food security. The bureau’s involvement underscores the Department of Agriculture’s (DA) ongoing efforts to protect and sustain ocean health.
DA-BAFE is committed to safeguarding our oceans, not only for today but for future generations. By participating in this global initiative, DA-BAFE contributes to the preservation of marine resources and support the livelihoods of Filipino fisherfolk.
The ICC in Manila Bay demonstrates the importance of collective action in tackling environmental challenges, encouraging greater awareness of the need for sustainable practices. ###DA-BAFE ICTST
