QUEZON CITY – The Bureau of Agricultural and Fisheries Engineering (BAFE) and the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) has successfully completed the Initial mapping of corn and onion pilot farmlands (Bongabong, Nueva Ecija). This milestone represents a step forward in agricultural digitalization through the use of remote sensing technology for data-driven planning and resource allocation. While currently applied in a single municipality, this achievement sets the foundation for broader implementation, paving the way for more efficient and informed decision-making in the sector.

Using satellite imagery, geodatabasing, and classification—advanced geospatial technologies for agriculture—the project has accurately mapped corn and onion production areas. This map will help the Department of Agriculture (DA) in better allocating resources, refining production strategies, and identifying supply chain gaps. With space-based data, policymakers can make informed decisions to support farmers, improve productivity, and strengthen food security.

The mapping initiative is just the beginning. Moving forward, BAFE and PhilSA are working towards expanding the project to cover corn and onion area nationwide. This expansion aims to provide a more extensive and accurate database to further strengthen the country’s agricultural planning and infrastructure development.

This project collaboration highlights the government’s commitment to modernizing Philippine agriculture through technology-driven solutions. By integrating space technology with agricultural engineering, the country moves closer to achieving a more resilient and efficient agricultural sector.###DA-BAFE ICS
