DAVAO CITY – The 25th Davao Agri-Trade Expo (DATE), a premier event held from September 28 to 30, 2023, at the SMX Convention Center, turned the spotlight on an array of solutions, technologies, and innovations that are poised to empower Filipino farmers and bolster their competitiveness in the global market.
DATE is an annual event organized by the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCCII) that aims to strengthen agribusiness by reinforcing collaboration between the government and the private sector for the development of the agriculture sector.
DA-BAFE Asst. Director Engr. Juana T. Tapel, PhD presented an Introduction to Agricultural Innovation during the 25th Davao Agri-Trade Expo’s Day 1 (September 28, 2023) Plenary 1 with the theme Agriculture’s Connected Future: How Technology Can Yield New Growth
DA-BAFE Asst. Director Engr. Juana T. Tapel, PhD, underscored in her presentation that innovation is not merely the creation of a new idea but the evolution and widespread dissemination of enhanced policies, products, processes, or services.
Asst. Dir. Tapel further expounded that innovation in agriculture extends beyond mere technological advancements like apps, drones or farm machinery. It encapsulates a broad spectrum of social, organizational, and institutional processes, from securing market access and credit to pioneering methods of marketing produce.
Agricultural innovation is a multifaceted process with a diverse array of stakeholders. Governments, civil society, farmer organizations, research bodies, and the private sector collectively contribute to nurturing an environment conducive to agricultural innovation.
Agricultural innovation plays an indispensable role in tackling global challenges through enhancing competitiveness, promoting sustainability, and fostering equality in agriculture. It amplifies productivity while judiciously managing natural resources and ensures long-term viability. Moreover, it minimizes the adverse environmental impacts of production and is pivotal for achieving food security for an exponentially growing population.
As outlined in NAFMIP 2021-2030, the Agriculture Innovation System (AIS) is set to fortify research, development, and extension by incentivizing the agri-fishery sector’s capacity to innovate and introduce novelty throughout the value chains.
Asst. Dir. Tapel presented DA-BAFE’s trailblazing initiatives on agricultural innovation which includes Innovation on Governance through Digitalization, Renewable Energy Program for the Agriculture and Fisheries Sector (REPAFS), and Agricultural and Fisheries Engineering Central Hub.
John Carlo Tria, president of DCCCII, emphasized that maintaining competitiveness is paramount for farmers, agribusinesses, and food producers. Embracing avant-garde technologies such as precision agriculture, IoT (Internet of Things), drones, and autonomous machinery can augment efficiency, curtail costs, and enhance productivity, he said.
Other speakers in the plenary session were Mr. Remus “Buddy” Tancontian, National Sales Manager of AgriDom, who discussed Precision Agriculture – Optimizing Inputs, Maximizing Yields and Engr.
